13 killed, Over 20 Seriously Injured After An Oil tanker rammed Into Two Matatus Along Kisumu-Kakamega Highway

At least 13 people succumbed to injuries and over 20 were hospitalized following the grisly accident at the Iguhu, River Yala bridge along the Kisumu – Kakamega highway.

The horrific road carnage occurred at around 6 pm Wednesday at Iguhu area after a tanker travelling towards Kakamega lost control and hit two matatus heading towards Chavakali at around 6 pm.

“The vehicle, Mercedes Benz tanker whose driver escaped after the accident was being driven towards Kakamega direction.” Preliminary police findings show.

The vehicle whose driver is on the loose, allegedly veered to the right side of the road hitting two vehicles.

The two matatu vehicles, which were hit had passengers who were travelling to Kisumu from Kakamega.

Those injured were taken to nearby hospitals including Mbale and Kakamega Referral Hospital with reports indicating that the majority are in critical condition.

Ten passengers died on the spot, three more died upon arriving and while undergoing medication respectively, whereas over 20 others escaped with multiple injuries and are still under doctors watch.

The wreckage of the three vehicles were towed to Kakamega Police Station.

Police are still hunting down the driver of the Mercedes Benz truck.
