In the heart of Migori County lies Kitere, a community where gold mining has transformed the fortunes of many.

For years, residents grappled with high unemployment rates and economic hardships, but with the discovery of gold deposits, life has taken a new turn.

Gold mining has not only provided employment but also sparked entrepreneurial ventures that have improved living standards. Interviews with local stakeholders paint a vivid picture of this transformation.

Stephen Otieno, a manager and seasoned miner, has witnessed the industry’s growth and its impact on the community firsthand. “When I started mining here ten years ago, only a handful of people were involved, and we used basic tools. Now, with improved equipment and partnerships, more residents are employed, and the production process has become more efficient,” Says Otieno.

As a manager, Otieno oversees daily operations, ensuring the safety of the miners while meeting production targets. “We’ve seen more young people join the industry to earn a living, which helps them avoid vices like crime and substance abuse,” Otieno Connotes.

Despite the challenges that come with mining, including safety risks, Otieno believes the trade has provided opportunities for many to escape poverty.

Some of the processes undertaken after Gold mining has occured

For Mary Ako, the mine offers a source of stability and hope. Previously jobless, she now works as a miner, providing for her three children. “The income from mining has helped me pay school fees and meet household needs,” alludes Ako.

Ako describes the work as demanding, but the benefits outweigh the difficulties; “We work in shifts, sometimes from dawn till dusk, but knowing that my children can go to school makes it worthwhile.”

James Ochieng, another miner, echoes similar sentiments. Before joining the mining site, Ochieng struggled to make ends meet through casual labour. “Mining is tough, but it’s better than being unemployed. It has allowed me to save a little and even start small farming projects at home,” says Ochieng.

However, Ochieng paints a picture that miners still face challenges, including inconsistent gold yields and health risks from long working hours. He hopes for more support from local authorities to ensure their safety and improve working conditions.

The gold mining industry in Kitere has not only created direct employment for residents but also stimulated local businesses. One such business is operated by Rose Omondi, a food vendor who caters to miners and other workers at the site.

“Before the mining boom, I sold vegetables in the market, but the earnings were minimal. Now, I sell hot meals to miners daily, and my profits have doubled,” Observes Omondi.

Her food stall, set up near the entrance of the mine, bustles with activity as miners grab quick meals during their breaks. She offers local delicacies such as ugali and sukuma wiki, served with fish or meat.

“Miners work hard, so they need nutritious food. This business has not only improved my income but also allowed me to employ two assistants,” says Omondi.

Rose’s success is a reflection of how gold mining has boosted the local economy, with more traders setting up businesses to meet the needs of the growing workforce.

While the benefits of gold mining are evident, the industry is not without its challenges; Otieno highlights the risks of accidents and the fluctuating price of gold in the market.

“We need more investment in safety equipment and training for miners to reduce accidents,” Concurs Otieno.

Mary and James also stress the need for support from the county government. They hope that with better infrastructure, such as roads and healthcare facilities, the community can thrive even more.

Despite these challenges, the miners remain optimistic about the future. “Gold has given us a lifeline,” as remarked by Mary.

“It’s tough work, but it has opened doors that were previously closed.” says

The transformation brought about by gold mining in Kitere serves as a testament to how natural resources, when harnessed responsibly, can change the trajectory of a community. With continued investment, improved working conditions, and support from local authorities, the industry has the potential to sustain livelihoods for generations to come
