Kenya to roll out MPOX vaccination

Kenya will start rolling out MPOX vaccination in the coming days, targeting the most vulnerable groups affected this far in 13 counties after it received the first batch of 10,700 doses through concerted efforts that involved the Government and a number of development partners.

Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Thursday morning when she led a team to receive the vaccines, public health and professional standards PS Mary Muthoni said the vaccines would be critical in reducing the spread of the virus, whose infection has now doubled since December 2024.

As of today, there are 68 confirmed cases, up from 32 in December, with one person reported dead.

13 counties remain at a high risk, most of them being the country’s entry points.

Development partners involved in the procurement and transportation of the vaccines say vaccination is not the end goal but a step towards battling the virus that has ravaged several African countries.

Statistics show that the vaccine is 82% effective when one gets two doses, 4 weeks apart.

There is hope that more vaccines would be coming Kenya’s way as it continues to engage more partners in an effort to secure the country and keep the disease out of its borders.
