Tharaka Nithi Raises Alarm Over Rising Cases of Child Abandonment, Possible Syndicate Suspected

The County Government of Tharaka Nithi has raised serious concerns over a growing trend of child abandonment, amid fears that a well-organised syndicate may be behind the disturbing incidents.

In just two months, six children—all boys—have been found abandoned near Bonanza Children’s Home in Chuka, with some tragically discovered dead. Authorities are alarmed by the possibility that the children are not all from the county, but may be brought in and dumped by individuals from other regions.

Kelly Rwigi Karimi, the county’s Chief Officer for Children and Gender, visited the scene alongside county and police officials, calling for immediate investigations. She pointed to a potential network engaging in infanticide and child trafficking, warning that failure to act swiftly could embolden the perpetrators.

“This trend is extremely worrying,” said Karimi. “If no proper investigations are carried out, it may set a dangerous precedent that allows those involved to go unpunished.”

She urged residents to be vigilant and report suspicious behaviour, particularly those who were recently expectant but no longer seen with their children. The county has provided a toll-free number, 1513, for the public to report such cases anonymously.

Despite the discovery of five children in previous weeks, police have yet to issue any updates or reports on the investigations, prompting further concern over delayed action.

Authorities are now appealing to law enforcement to intensify efforts and bring the perpetrators to justice, as the community grapples with shock and grief over the tragic incidents.
