The event, graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Hon. Julius Migosi Ogamba, EBS, underscored the government’s commitment to fostering innovation, digital skills, and technological excellence among students.

Hon. Ogamba hailed the Huawei ICT Competition as a transformative platform that equips Kenyan students with cutting-edge digital skills, preparing them for global leadership. “Technology is the cornerstone of modern economies.

As Kenya advances towards a digital future, we must empower our students with the necessary skills to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth,” he stated.

The competition, which attracted over 21,000 university and college students from across 18 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, saw Kenya’s top 21 students qualify for the Regional Final.

Twelve will represent the country at the Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, and will have an exclusive technology experience in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Cabinet Secretary lauded Huawei’s long-standing partnership with Kenya’s education sector, citing its role in training over 500 universities and TVET lecturers in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, and 5G technology. He also highlighted President William Ruto’s Digital Superhighway Initiative as a key driver in Kenya’s digital transformation journey.

“As a Ministry, we recognize the importance of strategic partnerships.

Through collaborations with institutions like Huawei, Safaricom, and UNESCO, we are integrating technology into education and bridging the digital skills gap,” added Hon. Ogamba.

In closing, the Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening higher education funding and ensuring a sustainable ICT talent pipeline for the nation’s economic growth.
