Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) are transforming healthcare delivery in Nakuru County by organising patients into support groups. MDT outreach initiatives in Bahati Sub-County delivered essential health services to hundreds of residents, illustrating the county’s commitment to improving health outcomes.A move believed to be line with Governor Susan Kihika’s manifesto.
The MDT inreach held at Ndege Ndimu Dispensary attended to 285 clients, offering a comprehensive range of services, including health screenings, education, immunisations, and treatments. In addition to immediate care, the team identified cases that required follow-up and referral to ensure continuous patient support and management. The proactive approach aims to streamline healthcare access for residents, improving patient outcomes by detecting and addressing health issues early.
Another MDT-led inreach event was conducted at Menengai Crater Dispensary, where healthcare providers served 210 clients. This event offered screenings for cancer and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), family planning services, and other essential treatments. The integration of multiple services under one roof has been a key strategy, allowing residents to receive holistic healthcare without having to travel to multiple facilities.
In addition to inreach services, the formation of new support groups has been a central part of the MDT’s strategy. In Kabati, Naivasha, a new support group comprising 50 members has been established. These groups offer vital support to patients with chronic conditions, creating networks that encourage peer support and provide a platform for ongoing health education.
“This approach is critical in building a healthier community,” remarked an MDT representative. “By organising patients into support groups, we can offer them not only medical care but also the support they need to manage chronic conditions and improve their quality of life.”
The MDTs, which operate across various sub-counties in Nakuru, include healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines. They work collaboratively to address a broad spectrum of health needs, from preventive care and screenings to chronic disease management and health education. By providing integrated services through community-based inreach events, MDTs are removing barriers to healthcare, particularly for residents in rural areas who may lack regular access to comprehensive medical services.
Through these efforts, Nakuru County is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable healthcare solutions that bring services closer to the people. Governor Kihika’s vision for improved health outcomes through MDTs is already yielding positive results, as more residents are reached and provided with continuous care. The MDT initiatives represent a model for community-centred healthcare, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive support that extends beyond single consultations and into ongoing management and preventive care.
As MDT outreach and inreach initiatives continue to expand, the county anticipates that more residents will benefit from enhanced healthcare access, fostering a community that is well-equipped to manage both immediate and long-term health needs.
