Kibera Soccer Women FC Poised to be Celebrated by CFK Africa as Community Champions After Stellar Performance in National FKF League

NAIROBI, Kenya – On August 9, CFK Africa, a nonprofit organisation empowering youth in Kenya’s informal settlements, will host its annual community awards ceremony on August 9 in Kibera. The event will recognise individuals and groups making significant contributions to their communities and celebrate the recent national victory of Kibera Soccer Women FC in the FKF Women’s Cup Finals.

Set to take place in Kibera, the largest informal settlement in Kenya, the awards aim to spotlight unsung heroes who demonstrate resilience, innovation, and leadership despite limited resources. According to CFK Africa Executive Director Jeffrey Okoro, the event reflects the organisation’s commitment to grassroots change and uplifting local champions driving transformation in some of the country’s most underserved areas.

“Despite operating with limited resources, members of our community demonstrate leadership, resilience, and lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others,” Okoro said. “We are excited to honour these unsung heroes at our annual awards event.”

The awards are unique in that nominations and selections are entirely driven by residents. Honorees will embody CFK Africa’s core values – impact, sustainability, inclusivity, resilience, innovation, and youth mentorship – as seen through their contributions to health, education, gender equality, and community development.

A special highlight this year will be the recognition of Kibera Soccer Women FC, CFK Africa’s professional women’s soccer team, for winning the national FKF Women’s Cup. The historic victory is a proud moment for the community and a testament to the talent and potential of youth in informal settlements. Team members also mentor young girls through CFK Africa’s empowerment programs, inspiring the next generation of female leaders.

“CFK Africa has always believed that community-led development is essential for long-term change,” said Okoro. “In a changing world, we must continue to foster solutions that come from within, allowing hope, talent, and innovation to flourish where they’re needed most.”
