Professor Kithure Kindiki was sworn in today as Kenya’s third Deputy President, marking a significant transition in the East African nation’s political landscape. The ceremony, held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, followed the unprecedented impeachment of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, on 17 October.
Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfrida Mokaya administered the oath of office at precisely 10:42 AM local time, with Chief Justice Martha Koome presiding over the ceremony. President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, and members of the diplomatic corps witnessed the historic occasion.

In his inaugural address, Kindiki pledged unwavering loyalty to President Ruto, emphasising their long-standing political relationship. “I will be faithful and loyal to you, Mr President,” Kindiki declared, addressing the packed auditorium. “For nearly two decades, I have been your political student, and I commit to serving alongside you in transforming our beloved nation.”
The new Deputy President, who previously served as Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, outlined his vision for Kenya’s future. “Our nation stands at a crucial juncture, and I understand the weight of responsibility that comes with this office,” he remarked. “Together with President Ruto, we shall work tirelessly to address the pressing challenges facing our people and drive Kenya towards prosperity.”
Kindiki’s appointment comes after a brief period of political uncertainty, following court challenges initiated by former Deputy President Gachagua. However, recent judicial rulings cleared the way for today’s ceremony, allowing for a smooth transition of power.
The ceremony marked a pivotal moment in Kenya’s political history, as Kindiki became the first Deputy President to assume office following an impeachment under the 2010 Constitution. His extensive academic background, including a PhD from the University of Pretoria and authorship of over 30 publications, brings scholarly expertise to the position.
Speaking about governance priorities, Kindiki emphasised the importance of unity and stability. “Our focus must be on strengthening our democratic institutions and fostering economic growth that benefits all Kenyans,” he stated. “I am committed to supporting President Ruto’s bottom-up economic transformation agenda and ensuring its successful implementation.”
The event concluded with Kindiki receiving his instruments of power and immediately assuming his constitutional duties as Kenya’s second-in-command. His appointment has been welcomed by various political figures who view his academic and administrative experience as valuable assets to the presidency.
As Kenya navigates through this transition, all eyes will be on how the new Deputy President executes his mandate and supports President Ruto’s administration in addressing national challenges, including economic reforms and governance issues.
