ODM party already preparing for 2027 General elections

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is embarking on a comprehensive strategy to prepare for the 2027 General Elections, aiming to regain political influence across Kenya. Chairperson Gladys Wanga has confirmed that the party will field candidates for all elective positions, including the presidency, during the elections scheduled for August 2027.

At a recent event in Kisumu County, Wanga dismissed claims that ODM lacks interest in vying for the highest office, asserting, “We are going to field candidates from MCAs, MPs, Senators, Women Reps, Governors and even the presidency.” This declaration reflects ODM’s commitment to a full-spectrum political campaign aimed at capturing seats at all levels of government.

The party’s leadership is bolstered by the appointment of Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o as interim party leader. Nyong’o, a founding member of ODM and an experienced politician, is expected to guide the party through this critical period. Wanga praised him for his leadership capabilities and emphasized that under his guidance, ODM would strengthen its position in Kenyan politics.

In addition to candidate selection, ODM is launching a national membership drive to expand its base. Wanga has called on supporters to join the party en masse, highlighting that a robust membership is vital for electoral success. This initiative aims to engage grassroots supporters and ensure their voices are heard in the party’s decision-making processes.

To further solidify its grassroots presence, ODM plans to conduct elections at the local level in November 2024. These elections are intended to empower local leaders and enhance community engagement within the party. By fostering a strong local presence, ODM hopes to build a more resilient political organization capable of addressing the needs of its constituents.

Moreover, ODM is strategically focusing on candidate unity in competitive regions such as Kwale County. In past elections, fragmented candidacies have hindered the party’s chances of winning seats. To address this issue, ODM leaders are emphasizing consensus-building around single candidates who can effectively challenge incumbents and other political rivals.

As part of its broader strategy for 2027, ODM is also keenly aware of the evolving political landscape in Kenya. The party aims to position itself as a viable alternative to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), while maintaining its identity as an opposition force. This involves not only fielding strong candidates but also articulating clear policies that resonate with voters’ concerns.

Jim’s preparations for the 2027 General Elections reflect a determined effort to reclaim its political strength and influence across Kenya. With a focus on grassroots engagement, candidate unity, and strategic leadership under Professor Nyong’o, the party is poised to present a formidable challenge in the upcoming electoral cycle. As it moves forward, ODM aims to build on its legacy while adapting to changing dynamics in Kenyan politics. The next few years will be crucial for ODM as it seeks to galvanize support and secure victories at all levels of government.
