Hussein Mohammed and McDonald Mariga Elected President, Vice During FKF

On December 7, 2024, Hussein Mohammed was elected as the new president of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). The elections took place during a Special General Meeting at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi. Mohammed, who is also the CEO of Extreme Sports, won the election after a competitive voting process.

In the first round of voting, Mohammed received 42 votes, surpassing his closest competitor, Doris Petra. Petra, the immediate former FKF vice president, garnered 31 votes. Former FKF CEO Barry Otieno came in third with 10 votes. Other candidates included Cleophas Shimanyula, who received 4 votes, and Gor Mahia legend Sammy “Kempes” Owino, who secured 2 votes.

The election required a runoff since no candidate achieved the necessary 50% +1 majority in the first round. As a result, the top three candidates Mohammed, Petra, and Otieno advanced to a second round of voting. However, Petra surprised many when she conceded to Mohammed before the second round began. Otieno followed suit shortly after.

“Thank you to all the delegates who believed in this fresh start,” Mohammed said after his victory. “This is not just our win; it’s a win for every player, fan, club, and supporter who dreams of a better future for our game.” His words resonated with many attendees who were eager for change within Kenyan football.

Mohammed will be joined by McDonald Mariga as vice president. Mariga is a former Harambee Stars and Inter Milan midfielder. His experience in football will be invaluable as they work to improve the standards of the sport in Kenya.

The FKF elections were significant not only for electing new leaders but also for setting a new direction for Kenyan football. The previous administration under Nick Mwendwa faced numerous challenges, including allegations of mismanagement and corruption. These issues led to calls for greater accountability and transparency within the federation.

The newly elected officials will face several immediate challenges. One pressing issue is addressing the concerns raised by players and clubs regarding funding and support. Many stakeholders have expressed dissatisfaction with how resources have been managed in recent years. Mohammed’s administration will need to rebuild trust among players and fans alike.

In addition to addressing funding issues, the new leadership must also focus on grassroots development. Investing in youth programs is essential for nurturing future talent in Kenyan football. Mohammed has indicated that he intends to prioritize youth development initiatives during his tenure.

The election results were closely monitored by various stakeholders in Kenyan football. Many observers noted that this election marked a turning point for FKF. The involvement of multiple candidates indicated a growing interest in leadership roles within the federation.

The newly elected officials will also need to engage with sponsors and partners effectively. Building strong relationships with corporate sponsors is crucial for securing funding for various programs and initiatives. This engagement will help ensure that Kenyan football can thrive both domestically and internationally.

As part of their commitment to transparency, Mohammed and Mariga plan to hold regular meetings with stakeholders. These meetings will provide an opportunity for open dialogue regarding ongoing initiatives and challenges facing Kenyan football.

Hussein Mohammed’s election as FKF president alongside McDonald Mariga as vice president marks a new chapter for Kenyan football. Their leadership comes at a critical time when stakeholders demand accountability and positive change within the federation. With their combined experience and vision for the future, there is hope for revitalizing Kenyan football and restoring its former glory.
