A borehole believed to be the source of the strange disease that has ravaged three villages; Amarondo, Nyabigege and Nyarigiro in South Mugirango, Kisii County has been cordoned off temporarily as samples are taken for further investigations.
Preliminary results show the well, which has been in use for a while, was contaminated and contained faeces as tension wreaked havoc in the three villages.
Public health and professional standards PS Mary Muthoni, who led a government delegation to Kisii to assess the situation, said there was no serious cause for alarm but advised that the well be shut temporarily as further investigations are carried out.
Efforts to identify and contain the mysterious illness have intensified as more people reportedly fell sick and were admitted to various hospitals in the county.
At least 20 more patients have been hospitalized with similar symptoms of high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness.
Health Ministry officials are now investigating village water sources as a potential cause.
PS Mary has also called on residents to be mindful of their surroundings, calling for high hygiene maintenance, including boiling water they drink and cook with.
